Missions are born in the hearts of those who believe it’s too painful for things to remain the same. These are people who respond to God’s invitation to join Him in changing the way things are into the way things could be—in exchanging beauty for ashes, gladness for mourning, and praise for despair.
We are pursuing a mission that is called, compelling and exciting. It is “called” because it is a response to God’s calling in Isaiah 61:1-3 to “bind up the brokenhearted,” to “comfort all who mourn,” and “to bestow upon them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” We identify this calling as the “Soul Care Commission.” It is Jesus’ mission statement in Luke 4, and it is a central purpose given to Christ-following individuals and their churches.
Our mission is compelling because of the urgency and the depth of the need it is called to meet. We are living in a spiritual, mental health crisis. Anxiety, depression, addiction, grief, anger, hopelessness, and suicidal thinking are among the symptoms creating overwhelming pain in people’s lives. The extent of the suffering among us is unprecedented. The challenges of domestic violence, child abuse, human trafficking, and homelessness are urgent. Marriages, families, churches and communities are breaking down under the weight of the suffering. Something needs to be done. Something needs to be done now.
Our mission is exciting because it’s an expression of the primary mission God calls us to serve–to provide soul care that shapes people into the image of Christ. Our mission draws Christ-reflecting people whose compassion for the suffering of others compels them to take action–to do something now about that suffering. The sacrifices we make for the cause of this mission translate into the wild, fulfilling joy of knowing that God is using us to make a difference in the lives of people who will experience healing, growth and renewal as they are drawn deeper into their relationship with God.
